Imperial Captain: Hold your positions!
::Shouted the Imperial Captain over the Empire's outpost in the harsh wasteland of the Veldt. The grassy plains had proved a most unwelcoming home for the Empire's soldiers. The Refiner's Fire is what many of them called it, for this encampment in the monster infested grassland was where the Empire had chosen to train their elite forces. The harsh conditions and constant danger made hardened soldiers out of the softest of them in a matter of days, provided they lived that long. But seasoned warriors as they were, they weren't prepared for this kind of assault. The army alone seemed to have swooped in out of nowhere in the dead of knight; a legion of armored knights led by Wutai captains. Their ranks held aloft the banner of Doma. This army was skilled and coordinated enough to present a threat on its own, but with that THING at their head, the Imperial soldiers never stood a chance. Since the uprising in Tzen, support was slow coming to them. Reinforcements would have to sail all the way to the eastern coast and reach them on foot. The men were beginning to believe they'd been abandoned by their beloved capital. But at this assault that belief was gone. Now they knew help was not coming. But still the Captain took charge of his men as he always had, preparing himself to pay the price of a true patriot::
Captain: We are the last line of defense for our men! We have to hold out until they can retreat to our stronghold in the mountains!
Soldier: CAPTAIN! IT'S COMING BACK!!!
::The Captain turned and saw it again. It had circled over the mountain ridge where his men were retreating. The fires that rose from the battlefield choked the skies with thick black plumes, keeping the creature darkened from their view, but perhaps it was better that way. What the Captain could see was horrific. A creature of nightmare. A great shadow shrouded in flames and smoke. The beat of its great wings whirled the smoke around it like the clouds of a hurricane. The Captain stretched his gaze past it. The Monster had cut off their retreat. He could see the fires barring the path to the retreat, and even further he could see the destruction on the mountainside. The avalanche had crushed the entrance to their stronghold::
Soldier: Captain! We have to surrender! If we flee any other way, they'll overtake us!
::The Captain closed his eyes and sighed, letting his heavy shoulders fall under the weight of despair. They had only one option now::
Captain: No surrender. We fight until the very last man. If we're going to die we'll do it with dignity.
Soldier: Sir! This is no time for--
Captain: We have no time left at all! Listen to me soldier, they will not accept a surrender. Doma takes no prisoners.
::The line of men that surrounded him in their positions lowered their rifles and looked to him, their eyes wide and their mouths open to hear such disheartening talk from their commander. This was not how he wanted things to end for them. He had trained these men to be the best of the best. The Empire's finest warriors, and dammit they were going to go down fighting like it::
Captain: Men, it's been an honor to have served with you. Any man would be lucky to have the loyalty and the tenacity in his troops as you have shown me. Now if we're going down, let's take as many of these bastards to meet Shin with us!
::And with that last rallying cry from their commander, the 208th legion of the Ghestalian Empire charged on in their greatest and final battle. It was over quickly. Many of Doma's honorable knights lay among the slain. All of the Empire's were numbered among the dead. As the Doma forces secured the area, the great fiery shadow descended from the sky to land in their midst. The Count flourished his black cloak back and took in the scene with his dark reddish brown eyes. The corner of his mouth twitched into a smile. This was the life that he craved; the sounds of battle, the clang of weapons, the bitter smell of sulfur, and the ozone stench of magic hanging in the air, the contests of strength, of will, of courage, he felt the thrill of ecstasy releasing like the end of making love. And this battle had been one of the most glorious yet thanks to his opponents. He spoke to Kamikaze at his side, but his eyes remained on the scene like he were taking in a masterpiece of art::
I am unused to such bravery from the Empire. At the end they knew what awaited them, but charged onward regardless. They even began strapping explosives to themselves. Now these were true men. Would you not agree Kamikaze?
