Well, since its only now 9 days till Samhain, I thought I'd share some of my horror movie recommendations and the reasons why.
Where available I will link to a torrent of the movie, as some of these you would be hard-pressed to find at Blockbuster. *Note some of these titles are for mature audiences due to sexual and mature themes*
Now, in no particular order, here are Loci's top choices in the (loosely) horror genre:
Vampyr- 1931: While not much of a vampire movie, this German horror film is a masterpiece at instilling a sense of dread and fear in subtle way, instead of the outright 'horror' of modern horror movies. It's atmosphere and sense of impending doom make it well worth a watch, even if its as old as your grandmother.

The Evil Dead- 1979: Ok so while this may seem like that not scary of a movie, knowing Bruce Campbell's more notable zanny nature, the first Evil Dead however was far darker then the cartoony sequels. Though, in my opinion, not downright frighting, its ability to make you feel icky and disturbed makes it a classic of classic.

The Howling- 1981: Perhaps the most overlooked werewolf movie, this one should stand up there beside American Werewolf in London or the Wolfman in its cinema standing - it combines the some of the best elements of what is needed in a werewolf movie. It also has some of the best non-cgi werewolves ever - sexy time yes?

The Company of Wolves- 1984: What better to follow one werewolf movie with another? This symbolic folktail of the sexual connotations of wolves/werewolves plays like an original Brothers Grimm warning tale, truly not about werewolves as a symbolic journey from childhood to adulthood, filled with frightening imagery of a sudden, unknown and unstoppable life transition.

Suspiria- 1977: An Italian film about a young girl who goes to Munich to attend a ballet school, she soon discovers that it is run by a coven of witches. Why this one makes the list is its use of cinematography and lighting to generate horror and a nightmarish reality, as well as displaying very brutal and elaborate murders.

Last Man On Earth- 1964: Unlike its recent remake "I Am Legend", this Vincent Price classic does what few films can do, that is filling the viewer with a sense of hopelessness of a world gone crazy and dead. Playing more like an episode of the Twilight Zone, I recommend this for anyone who hates Hollywood endings.

The Thing- 1982: A remake of the 1951 The Thing from Another World, this faithful adaptation of its original source has at its heart the true source of what humans fear, that of the unknown. An alien entity with the ability to mimic other living organisms, including the crew of this remote antarctic outpost. There's no where to run and anyone around you could be the Thing, what else could you want out of a horror? Though the gore does overshadow some plot, it's still a classic John Carpenter and definitely worth a watch.
-Can find it at your local rental shop-
Jacobs Ladder- 1990: Perhaps one of my favorite movies of all time, this is the epitome of the physiological horror/thriller. Truly one of the few movies that leaves the viewer wondering where reality ends and a nightmare begins. Filled with strong symbolism, amazing and twisted visuals and was the inspiration for the Silent Hill series, this is a must watch for anyone - in fact you'll probably have to watch it twice.

Well thats all that I can remember for the time being. Check them out if you can, well worth the watch. So that's my short list of horror films for this Halloween (even if they all aren't strictly horror).
