::Garrett and Clive are the last to arrive at a gathering of about twelve other students in the courtyard. Shaft stands at the head of the group of young men with his arms folded::
Nice to see you two could join us.
Garrett: Sorry Sir.
Well seeing as how you're helping the new guy out, I guess I can let it slide. But don't let it happen again.
Garret: Yes Sir.
::That being said, Shaft turns to Clive::
Alright then soldier, front and center, tell us your name, where you're from and what you expect to get out of this course. There's no room for shyness in my class. Be bold.

"This guy can't be for real? Ok, play along, see what happens. This could be fun."
Clive smirks with a mischievous grin as he pushes through the crowd to the center, the bottom of his staff smacking into feet and shins as he passes. He reaches the front of the crowd and spins around with a snap in his step. "Clive, just Clive. Lindblum, and I expect to prove that I don't need a sword to defend myself. My staff can do just fine." He says with a sly little smirk.

Really.
::Shaft grimaces::
In that case, I guess you wouldn't mind showing us a little. Men, fan out.
::The group spreads out in a circle in the courtyard, leaving Clive and Shaft in the center. Now that they're not huddled together, Clive might notice that not all of them are men. There's one girl in black leggings and boots with a simple white tank-top. He doesn't recognize her for a moment because her outfit's a far cry from what he saw her wearing last time. But that resentful frown she's giving him tells him at once that it's Kate::
Alright then maggot. Your opponent... hm. Kate, you're one of the best in the class. Step up.
::Kate does as instructed reluctantly, moving to the center of the circle facing Clive::
Just a longsword this time Kate. Don't overwhelm him on the first go.
::Shaft says, tossing the weapon to her::

"Oh gods, this is getting too good!"
Clive steps up in the center and gets into a defensive stance. He spins his staff with one flick of the wrist, the cords of the lanterns wrapping themselves around the head of the staff, till the lanterns snap together and stick, with a magnetic pull.
"You're looking smoking today, Kate. How about after this we do a little bouting in private? What do you say?" He says with a grin and a wink.

::Kate says nothing as Shaft signals for them to face their opponent. They clang their weapons together once before Kate pushes hers back, a little more forceful than necessary. Then the two of them take starting positions::
Engage.
::It's the only signal Shaft gives before Kate leaps forward, bringing her sword down, barely giving Clive any time to block::

Clive brings his staff across his chest to block kate's blade, then dropping the bottom end of his weapon, he knocks Kate behind the knee, knocking her on her face as he sidesteps around her. Now behind her, he waits for her next strike.
"Nothing works better then getting them all riled up! Silly girls.

::Kate falls forward, but instead of landing on her face, she lands on her hands, allowing her to cartwheel gracefully back to her feet. Then she spins her blade in a half circle, meeting Clive's staff again. Keeping his weapon locked with hers, she delivers three pinpoint kicks, one to his chest, one to his gut, and one just a little lower before pushing her blade, making him strike himself in the face with his own staff::

As the staff is pushed back, Kate feels it give, and spin in a circular motion, both ends striking her in the leg then in the chest. The push does force Clive to staggers back but maintains his balance and stance, though one can see that he's wincing a little from the surprise kicks. He then takes his staff and propels it forward with the hilt into Kate's stomach, she can also feel a sharp jolt of electricity pass through her when it makes contact with her.

::Kate's expression tells Clive that she felt the electricity, but it doesn't have near the impact it usually does. Nevertheless, she seems to take offense to it because her blade suddenly lights up with flames::
Now Kate, wait a second, that's--
::But now this isn't friendly sparring anymore. This is a grudge match for her. Her anger makes her faster and her strikes are harder, and the flames on her blade dance wildly in front of Clive's vision, blinding him in the process. Her blade meets his staff again, but she twists it out of her way before sweeping her weapon under his legs, knocking him on his back with her blade at his throat. She raises it, and with a fierce gaze brings it down. A clang of metal rings in the air, and Clive sees that Shaft blocked her weapon with a spear that looks too finely crafted to have come from the stock pile the students use. A raven is burned onto its head::
That's enough Kate, you've made your point.
::He looks back down at Clive::
Not bad... what was your name again?

Clive spits out a bit of dirt as he staggers to his feet, he can feel a slight burn on the back of his leg and fur there is assuredly burned off. Once to his feet, he dusts himself off, then looks to Kate.
"Next time, I won't hold back, if that's how you like it." He snidely states. With that comment, he turns to Shaft. "Clive, just Clive." He flicks his staff lightly, and the lanterns detach themselves from each other and fall, making a loud clank as they snap to a stop at the end of their cords. "So, does this always happen during bouts? Thought the idea of fencing was not to kill each other."

Actually, that's just Kate. I haven't seen her get angry like that in awhile. You must have pushed a button or two. Kate, That temper of yours just earned you extra laps.
::The girl looks resentfully at Clive::
Kate: Yes sir.
::She bows respectfully and starts her jog around the courtyard, her long drawn back braids bouncing back and forth behind her::
The rest of you, you know the drill. Ten laps, on the double.
::The class follows after Kate, Garrett beckoning Clive to follow him. Shaft calls after him before he can go though::
Oh and Clive, staff it is for today. But you start on longsword first thing tomorrow. You're quick, and you're precise, but those noodle arms of yours nearly cost you.

"I suppose I'm to call you 'sir', so sir. I should tell you that metal and me... if not channeled or insulated right kinda make for a nasty combo. A sword would just end up like a live wire in my hand, specially if I don't have the staff here to help dampen it. Just thought you should know. Ok, off to run."
With that, Clive takes off, holding his staff in his hand like he was carrying a flag. The metal and lanterns create noisy clanks as he comes upon Garret. "So, I totally planned that." He mentions to Garret with a wink. "Also, after class, got to tell you something. Just you, anywho, see you at the end." Then Clive charges past him, running near effortless despite the magnitude of metal and the heavy staff in hand. He was right, might not look like much but damn if running isn't something natural to him.

::Before Clive takes off, Garrett tells him in astonishment::
Garrett: You got him to call you by your name! Do you know how long it took for him to stop calling me maggot?
::But his complaint is soon lost as Clive zooms past him, quickly catching up with Kate who's remained at the front and is still gaining. She just spares him one glance and runs faster, refusing to let him get ahead of her::

(OOC: Am I going to have to charge you with RPWI?)
::Kate bows her head and barrels ahead again, keeping neck and neck with him, and if he didn't know better he'd say she was trying to muscle him off the makeshift track::

((Yes, yes you will))
Clive finds Kate's attempts humorous more then anything. She was pig-headed but if anyone was stubborn and competitive, it was Clive. Watch the tail. Clive tail slips out quickly, just high enough to cause Kate to trip below the knees and giving Clive that little extra leeway on the track.

(OOC: Curses! I hate this filter!)
::Clive gains some distance on her, feeling very proud of himself now that she's about a half a lap behind him. But one full lap later he finds himself experiencing a strange sensation. He turns back to look at his tail and finds that it's on fire. It barely registers as Kate's black braids come up along side him, nearly catching him in the face. She's wearing what is possibly the first smile he's ever seen on her::
Kate: That'll make you run faster, you little twit.
::Without breaking stride, she returns the favor and trips him herself::
Kate: Stop drop and roll.

"Wait, what!? AHH!" He yelps looking back to see his tail ablaze and then suddenly to find himself hitting the ground in a furry little roll, head over heal and a cloud of dust enveloping him.
Kate's smugness gets the better of her when she realizes, she failed to remember one important trait all Burmecians have. Ahead of her now, with good distance, is Clive. He has jumped out from his flaming tumble into the air and over Kate, not loosing speed or stride, though admittedly, still smoldering as he turns for another and final lap.

::The pigheadedness of the two appears equaled as they remain neck and neck even until the end of the course. Just when Kate looks like she's tiring out and his burmecian genes should put him ahead of her, she just keeps her pace despite her breathing growing shorter and her forehead breaking out in a sweat. Her eyes remained locked on his, neither one of them letting up. But had they been looking forward, they would have noticed the pillar at the end of the course. Both of them smash right into it and fall flat on their backs, dizzy, sweaty, and out of breath::

Clive sits up, hand on his head as he spits out dirt and rocks, all the while huffing and wheezing. "Nice work there graceful, now all I need is a gizzard and I'd thank you for the assistance in eating dirt."
