Auntie?
Natalia: Yes Iole.
What does it feel like to be in love?
::The beautiful elf woman stopped rocking in the wooden chair she was sitting in, looking up from her reading of the large book in her lap and down at the little girl who had been reading a book of her own sprawled out on the floor this entire time::
Natalia: What on earth made you ask that?
This girl in the book. It says she's in love, but it doesn't say how she knows.
Natalia: And why is this so important to you all of a sudden?
Not all of a sudden. It's on my list.
Natalia: And what list is that may I ask?
The "Things I'm going to do with the life Auntie gave me" list.
::The violet eyed woman gave her a half smile::
Natalia: You're a very unusual girl.
Well what's it like? You've felt it before haven't you?
::At first the girl wondered if she'd said something wrong because her Auntie didn't say anything for a long time::
Natalia: To tell you the truth I can barely remember.
So you have? Come on, tell me please?!
::She crawled to her Auntie's rocking chair, set her hands on the woman's knees and peeked up at her with her large round sky-blue eyes::
Natalia: Well it's not really as instant or grand as you might think. I suppose it starts with being friends. You start a sort of trade.
Trade? Like trade toys or candy?
Natalia: Something like that. It's more like acts of kindness that you give to each other without expecting anything back. And then you start to think about each other a lot. You spend time together, and then you begin to know the others' dreams. The things they want. Then you realize they're what you want as well. After that it's like you know what the other is thinking and feeling without having to speak.
Hm... like the boy in my dream.
::The little girl returned to her book on the floor, so she didn't notice the way her Auntie's dark eyebrows knit together over her hooded violet eyes::
Natalia: Boy?
Yeah. I had a dream last night about a boy with black hair and golden eyes. He was beautiful. He was all alone in a forest covered in mist, and he was crying. So I came up behind him. I was going to ask him why he was crying, but then I saw his eyes. They were so shiny and pretty, kind of like fireflies.
Natalia: Tell me more about this boy. What did you do next?
Well it was kind of like how you said it. I didn't really need to ask him anything. I just knew how to make him feel better. We went and played in the forest. He said he liked hearing me laugh. I said I liked his laugh too. Then the most amazing thing happened. We started flying! Kind of like how I do with you, but I didn't have to carry him. He flew with me! Auntie am I in love?
Natalia: Perhaps. What was his name?
::The girl slapped her hand to her forehead::
Oh no! I forgot to ask him! I should find out when I see him again.
Natalia: That would be a good place to start my dear little girl. Don't worry. If it's meant to be, you'll see him again.
::The woman dropped her voice lower::
Natalia: And there won't be a thing I or anyone else can do to stop you.
::Despite her efforts, the girl's ears seemed to perk up with that, much like a cat's::
Auntie, why would you want to stop me?
Natalia: Oh don't pay attention to me dear. Your Auntie's just talking to herself again.
::Iole's eyes snapped open to find themselves back in the Black Jack, curled up on her cot. She pulled herself into a sitting position, letting her black hair cascade over her shoulder. The dream had been vivid. She could remember lying on the floor with that same book in front of her. Why hadn't she thought about it since then?::
Auntie, what did you say back then? Why would you say that?
::She looked down at her hand, feeling an odd tingling sensation. Her ring, Oliver's engagement ring was cool and smooth against her finger, gleaming in the first of dawn's light. But her hand was still warm from where Stefan had touched it the night before::
